Episcopal Rosary Prayer
Questions about the Episcopal Church?
I'm supposed to do a short essay on it and I'm getting really confusing and misleading answers.
1. Do Episcopalians use the Book of Common Prayer, the Bible, or both?
2. Do Episcopalians say prayers before, say, going to bed? Do they say a rosary?
3. What are some notable differences between the Episcopal Church and the Catholic church?
Any other information regarding Episcopalians specifically would be very helpful. (:
Rather than just copying and pasting information from an unreliable source, as one poster did, I'd like to tell you about what I as one of millions of committed Episcopalians believe and practice:
The Book of Common Prayer is heavily drawn from the Bible. The BCP and the Bible together form the substance of every official act of worship in the Episcopal Church. The great majority of Episcopal parishes use the Eucharist for the main worship service every Sunday, and many have daily Eucharists and/or Morning or Evening Prayer.
Most Episcopalians I know say grace before meals--even in restaurants--and pray in the morning and evening. Some Episcopalians find the rosary helpful, but that's totally optional.
The Episcopal Church believes that men and women are equal in the eyes of God, and therefore ordain both men and women. Bishops are elected by the laypeople and clergy they lead, and that election is ratified by the leadership (both lay and ordained) of the other dioceses in the national church. Lay people are expected to be committed, studious Christians who grow in knowledge and faith, rather than merely rules-followers.
Many people in the Episcopal Church believe that gay people are as capable of living monogamous, lifetime relationships as straight people, and both gay people and straight people are admitted to the (extremely rigorous) ordination process. All are held to high standards of personal behavior and commitment to the Christian faith.
