Last Supper

what is the big deal about the last supper painting by Leonardo?

i mean, who cares..he wasnt with around when Jesus was on earth, so who cares what he included in the painting?
he could put barry bonds in there and it would still just be a painting.
now if he took a poloroid snapshot of the last supper...

Leonardo's depiction of the event was different from those before it; previously, artists portrayed the supper as a quiet, peaceful time. Leonardo chose the moment immediately after Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.

The perspective lines in the work all converge on Jesus (I think it's specifically his right eye, although I'm not sure) - look at the lines of the apertures in the walls and the detailing on the roof. Note also the 'halo' above the central opening behind Jesus, further focusing attention on him.

The materials used were also of interest - Leonardo was an experimental artist, and used tempera paint on a dry wall instead of a wet wall, which would have been the usual method at the time. It didn't work, and the painting began to deteriorate even in his own lifetime.

Add this to all the hype about Judas/Mary Magdalene and The Da Vinci Code, and you've got yourself one very interesting work!
