COLUMBUS, Ohio — Franklin County leaders on Tuesday put more money toward protecting women from violence.
Â
The funding will help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, 10TV's Tracy Townsend reported. Franklin County Commissioners approved more than $87,000 for agencies that help victims of stalking, sexual assault and rape.
One stalking victim, who asked not to be identified, said the support was critical to saving her life.
"I started getting creepy e-mails and a lot of threatening phone calls from my ex (boyfriend)," the woman said. "I was always very nervous when I was alone. I no longer went hiking; I live near one of the Metro parks and I no longer go hiking with my dog alone, it was very scary."
The woman is not alone, Townsend reported.
The stalking unit of the Columbus City Attorney's office reported an increase in stalking cases in 2009.
Cases were up to nearly 400 in 2009, up from 338 in 2008, Townsend reported.
Investigators said they only reach 20 percent of the victims.
Franklin County Commissioner Paula Brooks said the funding is critical to helping those in need.
"The problem appears to be growing and the need is increasing," Brooks said. "I certainly think we need to work together to identify ways to reach the 80 percent of those remaining victims."
Victim's advocate Robin Williams helps women and men build their cases in court.
"We have to have the physical evidence to go forward with the criminal charges," Williams said. "Many victims are getting threatening phone calls, voicemail messages, texts messages and they don't save that evidence a lot of times."
Commissioners also awarded grants to OhioHealth's Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio and the Mount Carmel Crime and Trauma Assistance Program, Townsend reported.
