Uncovering The Start Of The Industrial Revolution In Derby
Derby is located along the banks of the Derwent River and is in the East Midlands part of England. The first settlement was a roman camp that has been traced back 2,000 years ago. There are other roman forts in the area that displays an active roman occupation. It has also been discovered that the Vikings and the Anglo-Saxons co-existed at Derby.
This city was very important for the industrial revolution as the technology that was created in town was a catalyst for the industrial revolution. The very first water powered mills were in derby with the first being a silk mill and another being a cotton mill. There was a huge advancement in hosiery as the Derby Rib Attachment was developed in Derby and all major manufacturers used this machine.
The main mill that set of the Industrial revolution was the cotton spinning mill powered by water. This area developed in to the spot for engineering developments in manufacturing and they also exported many tools throughout Russia. Midland Railways eventually merged with the North Midland Railway and set up their headquarters in Derby. The railway also made trade very easy for the cloth manufacturers.
There are several lovely parks found throughout Derby and most were from Victorian times. Two of the main parks are Darley Park and Derwent and you can walk from Darley Park to Markeaton Park or Allestree Park by following the river walk.
There are also several bicycle paths that link the parks. There are plenty of wildlife and plants to view. There is also a beautiful arboretum which was inspired by central Park in New York City.
The cathedral of All Saints is known as Derby cathedral and is actually one of the smallest of all Anglican churches found throughout England. The original church was constructed in 943 but that no longer exists and the present church was built in the 14th century. The ring of bells in Derby cathedral is quite famous as they are the oldest found in the country. Many people also visit the cathedral to view the nests of peregrine falcons found in the tower.
A fantastic place to visit is the Silk Mill which was converted into the Derby Museum of Industry and History in 1974. This mill was made open to the public in 1777 where you could see the machines that twisted silk into thread. However it was not overly popular as the conditions in the mill were not very good.
