catholics what is the meaning of medal of saint benedict?

if someone wears what does mean? I have the medal but it's for the keys and I want to find a crucifix or medal but I don't know where can I find for free because in my town I cannot find in MX.. I would like to know the meaning and the benefits for using?

The Saint Benedict Medal?

Hey, I just wanted to know a few things about the St. Benedict medal.
First off i am looking to buying one, but I dont know if I should buy a cheap one or an expencive one. I want it to last a long time, and I dont want to lose it all of a sudden. I found this one on a website, but its worth $35.99, and then i found a REALLY cheap one on another site worth 0.15 cents. Should I buy one thats worth 20-40 dollars, or buy one thats worth .10 cents - 10 dollars?

Also, about getting it blessed. I know it has to be done by a priest, but how do I go about chosing a priest, or asking them. Do i just show up at a church and ask them to bless it for me? Does it cost any money to get it blessed? I live in Colorado, and I dont know what church or nothing. Anything would help. Thanks.

Greek Orthodoxes venerate the Virgin Mary exceptionally, even more so than Catholics.
Referring to the Virgin as "Theotokos"
a much higher title than Mother of our Lord.
But they do not as I know pray the Rosary. Half my family is G.O.

Walking into any G.O. Church, one will be overcome by the Icons of The Blessed Virgin and how center stage they are.
It's very hard understanding the Role the Virgin plays without
first coming to know the Virgin. She is the Ark. The Woman.

It can not be overstated how the G.O. church venerates Our Dear Mother and properly and boldly so.

*Edit: I asked the religious Orthodoxy expert in my family about your question. She told me it is an accepted and encouraged prayer of the Church, but not usually practiced except by the nuns and monks in the monasteries in both Russian and Greek Orthodoxy.

Should Christians Celebrate Christmas and Easter?

Both Christmas and Easter were pagan holidays that were not celebrated by the Church, until the Romans gained control of the Church in 325 A.D. December 25th has nothing to do with Christ's birth, instead it is the Roman goddess Saturn's birthday. Easter is holiday named in honor of Estore the Anglo-Saxon goddess of Spring. Knowing this history, shouldn't Christians take a stand against these pagan observances? What does a decorated tree, snow and Santa Claus have to with Christ? What does a Bunny, colored eggs, hot cross buns have to with Christ? Even more puzzling, what does Good Friday have to do with Christ? By the way he did not die on Friday, he was crucified in the middle of the week, and was and the grave for 3 days and 3 nights just as the scripture states, just as Jonah was in the belly of the fish for 3 days and 3 nights. He was crucified on Wednesday at around 3:00 PM and arose Saturday Evening after sundown. His Grave was discovered empty early Sunday Morning.

You are right about Christmas and Easter. they are both Pagan holidays. And Alexandra The Great made Christmas a 'Christian' holiday, (the day when Jesus Christ was supposed to be born), to appease the Pagans. Then the Roman Catholic Chruch adopted this as well.

But Christ was crucified on the cross on the day before the Jewish Holiday of the PASSOVER . The accounts of the Apostles, all say that Jesus told them to go and prepare a room, so that he might celebrate the Passover meal with them.

It was the morning after the Passover that He was handed over to Pilot and crucified. And He rose again on the 3RD day. The Bible states that they had to bury Jesus before making preparations for the Passover, which is celebrated on the Jewish Sabbath, which is Saturday. The Jewish Sabbath Day begins at 6PM on Friday and ends at 6PM the next day.

Jesus himself said he would rise again on the 3RD DAY, which brings us to Sunday. Although he did make reference to Jonah. he never actually said he would be dead for three days.

I believe Christians should be celebrating the death and resurection of Jesus on the same dates as the Jewish Passover, according to the Jewish calendar. Which varies and some years ago, actually fell on the same day as Easter. We should not celebrate Easter according to the Gregorian Calendar, which we now work on.

As for Christmas, again, no one knows the exact date of Jesus's birth, Christmas, as you say is a Pagan holiday. If Christians want to celebrate Christmas Day, then I believe their focus should be on the celebrating the gift God gave us, with the birth of Jesus, holding that above all the hype of presents etc. And I believe that it is the responsibility of Christian parents, to emphasise this to their children.

Some Christians just ignore Christmas as just another holiday.

It is also interesting to note that all the great events that happened in Jesus life, happened in conjunction with important Jewish Feast days. Chanukka the Festival of Lights is the closest to December 25th. However, other scholars put his birth date at around November some time.

Who Else Wants to Visit Italy This Easter?

For the citizens of Italy, largely a Roman Catholic people, Easter - "Pasqua" - is a very special time of year. It is, by far, the most sacred of all Christian holidays and, for most Italians, truly a reason to rejoice.

Many of the individual towns in Italy have their own unique Easter celebrations on Easter Sunday and during the days of Holy Week, including Good Friday. Easter Monday, also known as "la Pasquetta," is also a notable holiday throughout the country, with schools and businesses closed and people taking to the streets to continue the celebration that began with the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ the day before.

Holy Week

In Italy, the most typical way to mark Good Friday was the day that Jesus was crucified - is by an elaborate procession, Passion play, or similar event. Again, the commemoration of this solemn day on the Christian calendar varies from town to town.

In Chieti, in the Abruzzi region of Italy, the Good Friday procession is said to be the oldest in the country and is certainly one of the most moving. Men and children parade through the torch-lit streets of the town, each wearing the colors of their home parish. They carry symbols that characterize the Stations of the Cross and one individual carries a large wooden cross. The entire procession is accompanied by the haunting sounds of about 150 violins playing Miserere by Italian composer Savario Selecchy.

In Taormina, one woman is chosen to portray Mary, the mother of Jesus. She wanders through the dark streets in search of her lost son, assisted by black-robed locals who attempt to help her find Jesus.

In Calitri, men in white hoods topped by crowns of thorns make their way through the streets carrying crosses on their shoulders. Church choirs follow them, singing hymns, psalms, and folksongs of the region.

In the Sicilian town of Enna, Good Friday traditions go all the way back to the period of Spanish domination in Italy, around the 15th to 17th centuries. About 2,000 hooded men travel through the main streets holding Vare, religious statues of the dead Christ and his mother, Mary. Others carry symbols of the crucifixion, including the thirty denarii paid to Peter to betray Christ, as well as nails and a crown of thorns.

Easter Sunday and Monday

Marking a joyous day after a very solemn week, Easter celebrations in Italy are spectacular and generally last two days, as Easter Monday is a designated national holiday for Italians.

The most notable Easter celebration is in Florence and is called Scoppio del Carro, the explosion of the cart. This tradition includes an ornate cart, dragged through the streets of the city by several white oxen. Following mass at the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore, a dove-shaped rocket is aimed at the cart, igniting the fireworks within, which then explode accompanied by much fanfare and shouts of joy. A gala parade follows.

In Palermo, women dress in the elegant costumes of the 15th century Byzantine era and make their way through the streets of the town, handing out red Easter eggs to outstretched hands. In Chieti, a pageant is staged that represents the reuniting of mother and son, Mary and Jesus.

Easter Monday is a day of much merriment, characterized by events such as the wacky "cheese roll" in the Umbrian town of Panicale. Quite simply, participants roll their large wheel of cheese around a course set up on the streets of this quaint village. Whoever is able to get their cheese through the course with the fewest number of strokes wins the game. There is also free music, free wine, and lots of free hard-boiled eggs!

For the Catholics here- can people pray to Dr. Martin Luther King?

Catholics, what would you think if people began to have little statues and medals made of Dr. Marin Luther King, and knelt down before them, and prayed to him, for guidance, in helping them in the struggle for equality of all us humans>

After all, M.L. King was a "saint" in the Biblical definition of one- a true believer in Christ. And he was a martyr for the cause, also. That makes him really "holy".... like so many past martyrs that the RCC reveres!
Well- I say medals because my whole family STILL believes that ST. Christopher medals are powerful protection, and the Brown Scapulars, too!

The Jerusalem Stone and The Christian Gift

What is it about Jerusalem that draws us to its cobbled streets and worn stones? Is it the footprints of the ancient people who carved the city from the stones found in the surrounding hills? Is it the spirituality of the incumbent inhabitants that fought and struggled to maintain their right to be there? Is it modern Jerusalem with its thriving market places and its trendy bars and eateries that attract well heeled executives to sit alongside the faithful as they fortify their bodies and souls?

Jerusalem is the eternal prize in the religious World – it is the center of the three religions that controlled ancient civilization and was at the core of the religious wars that formed modern mankind. It is the hub; the definitive home of Christianity and the symbol of all that is holy for Christians the World over.

When we search for a Christian gift, we sometimes forget the significance that Jerusalem has for someone whose connection with Christianity is defined by the presence of the Holy Land. can you use the bible from your first communion for your Quinceanera?

I'm having my quince in a few months, and i was wondering if i can use the same bible i use in my first communion. it matches the theme of my dress and i don't want to spent extra money knowing i could reuse something from my first communion. quinces are expensive enough. also if you have any tips, that would be helpful.

Holi - Festival Of Colours

HOLI - THE FESTIVAL O COLOURS

Holi is one of the major festival of the vast country, called India. No wonder, a number of traditions, customs and festivals have cropped up around this very important festival.

As the culture and language changes from one state to the other, nature, significance and the way these festivals related to Holi are celebrated also varies a lot. While in the state of Rajasthan women take the lead, men in Punjab have grabbed the festival as an opportunity to display their bravery and dare-devil skills. On the other hand, quiet and peace loving people of West Bengal celebrate the occasion in a dignified and charming fashion.

As the brief spring warms the landscape, northern India cuts loose for a day of hijinx and general hilarity. The festival of Holi is celebrated on the day after the full moon in early March every year. Holi festival may be celebrated with various names and people of different states might be following different traditions. But, what makes Holi so unique and special is the spirit of it which remains the same throughout the country and even across the globe, wherever it is celebrated.

Originally a festival to celebrate good harvests and fertility of the land, Holi is now a symbolic commemoration of a legend from Hindu Mythology. The story centers around an arrogant king who resents his son Prahlada worshipping Lord Vishnu. Holi commemorates this event from mythology, and huge bonfires are burnt on the eve of Holi as its symbolic representation. This exuberant festival is also associated with the immortal love of Krishna and Radha.

Holi is an ancient festival of India and was originally known as 'Holika'. The festivals finds a detailed description in early religious works such as Jaimini's Purvamimamsa-Sutras and Kathaka-Grhya-Sutras. Historians also believe that Holi was celebrated by all Aryans but more so in the Eastern part of India. It is said that Holi existed several centuries before Christ. However, the meaning of the festival is believed to have changed over the years. Earlier it was a special rite performed by married women for the happiness and well-being of their families and the full moon (Raka) was worshiped. Holi is now a days recognized as one of the oldest Hindu festivals. Its reference can be found in religious scriptures and sculptures on walls of old temples. There are paintings, which show royal couple sitting on grand swing and maidens playing music and spraying colors on them. Whatever the scene and the theme, colors and mythology have always been an important part of these Holi depictions. However the most important myths and stories that have been associated with Holi are given below:

Story Of Radha and Krishna:

Lord Krishna was dark while his spiritual love-mate Radha had fair-complexion. So child Krishna often used to complain about the injustice of nature towards him to his mother Yashoda and would ask her the reason. One day, Yashoda suggested Krishna to apply color on Radha's face and changeher complexion in any color he desired. The naughty Krisha immediately set off to his mission and one can often see paintings and murals depicting Krishna throwing colors on Radha and other 'gopis'. This lovable prank of throwing colored powder and water jets called 'pichkaris' soon gained favor with the people and it evolved into the tradition of Holi. This is the reason that people often carry images of Krishna and Radha through the streets. The Holi of Mathura region, where Krishna was born, has a special fervor.

Story of Dhundhi:

It was there was an ogress called Dhundi who used to scare and trouble children in the kingdom of Prithu. She has many boons, which made her almost invincible but due to a curse from Lord Shiva, she was susceptible to the shots, abuses and pranks of village boys. It is believed that on Holi day, these children united and made combined efforts to chase away Dhundi by shouting at her, abusing her and playing pranks on her and finally succeeded in their mission. This is the reason that young boys are allowed to use rude words on this day without anybody taking offence.

Story Of Holika and Prahlad:

There was a demon-king named Hiranyakashipu who won over the kingdom of earth and ordered everybody to worship him and not the God. However, his little son Prahlad refused to do so and continued to worship the almighty Lord Vishnu, the Hindu God. He tried many times to kill him but Lord Vishnu saved him every time. One of the sisters of the king named Holika had powers to walk through fire unharmed. Thus he ordered her to kill Prahlad by walking through the fire with him. However, Lord Vishnu came to his help and Prahlad was saved while Holika perished. Somehow, she didn't knew that her powers were only effective if she entered the fire alone. Even today, bonfires are lit on the night of Holi in memory of the event and burning of the wicked aunt Holika.

Story Of Kamadeva:

After the death of his consort Sati, Lord Shiva was so shocked and hurt that he went into a deep meditation and stopped looking after his worldly responsibilities. This led to many complications in the world's affairs. Thus, gods conspired to bring him out of his trance with the help of Goddess Parvati, who wished to marry the great lord and Kamadeva, the God of love, passion and lust. Though, mindful of the consequences, Kamadeva undertook the task for the world's good and shot one of his love arrows on the great Lord who had mastered all the worldly temptations. As Shiva's eyes opened, he was furious by the trick of Kamdeva and directed the wrath of his third eye on him and burned him on the spot. However, later he did give him an immortal life. It is believed that Lord Shiva burned Kamadeva on the day of Holi and thus, many people worship him for his sacrifice and offer him a mango blossoms that he loved and sandalwood paste to cool off the pain of his fatal burns.

Rituals preparations of Holi

Rituals of the ancient festival of Holi are religiously followed every year with care and enthusiasm. Days before the festival people start gathering wood for the lighting of the bonfire called Holika at the major crossroads of the city. This ensures that at the time of the actual celebration a huge pile of wood is collected.

Holika Dahan Celebrations

Then on the eve of Holi, Holika Dahan takes place. Effigy of Holika, the devil minded sister of demon King Hiranyakashyap is placed in the wood and burnt. For, Holika tried to kill Hiranyakashyap's son Prahlad, an ardent devotee of Lord Naarayana. The ritual symbolises the victory of good over evil and also the triumph of a true devotee.

Children also hurl abuses at Holika and pray pranks, as if they still try to chase away Dhundhi who once troubled little ones in the Kingdom of Prithu. Some people also take embers from the fire to their homes to rekindle their own domestic fires.

Play of Colors

Next day, is of course the main day of Holi celebrations. The day is called Dhuleti and it is on this day that the actual play of colours take place. There is no tradition of holding puja and is meant for pure enjoyment. The tradition of playing colours is particularly rampant in north India and even in that region, there can be no comparison to the Holi of Mathura and Vrindavan. In Maharashtra and Gujarat too Holi is celebrated with lot of enthusiasm and fun. People take extreme delight in spraying colour water on each other with pichkaris or pouring buckets and buckets of it. Singing Bollywood Holi numbers and dancing on the beat of dholak is also a part of the tradition. Amidst all this activity people relish gujiya, mathri, malpuas and other traditional Holi delicacies with great joy.

Drinks, especially thandai laced with bhang are also an intrinsic part of the Holi festivity. Bhang helps to further enhance the spirit of the occasion but if taken in excess it might dampen it also. So caution should be taken while consuming it.

Holi Celebrations in South India

In south India, however, people follow the tradition of worshiping Kaamadeva, the love god of Indian mythology. People have faith in the legend which speaks about the great sacrifice of Kaamadeva when he shot his love arrow on Lord Shiva to break his meditation and evoke his interest in worldly affairs. After, an eventful and fun filled day people become a little sober in the evening and greet friends and relatives by visiting them and exchange sweets. Holi special get togethers are also organized by various cultural organizations to generate harmony and brotherhood in the society.

Any how in all where HOLI HAI... Come holi and the streets will reverberate with the chants of Holi hai...Colours will fill the atmosphere as people throw abeer and gulal in the air showing great joy and mirth in the arrival of this Spring Festival. Days before Holi, the markets get flooded with the colours of every hues. This aptly sets the mood of the people till the actual day of Holi. It is such a colourful and joyous sight to watch huge piles of bright red, magenta, pink, green and blue every where on the streets. Buying those colours seems as you are bringing joys and colour to your home and into your life. Children take special delight in the festival and demand every colour in loads. They have so many plans in their mind. They have to be the first to apply colour to Mama, Papa, siblings and a big bunch of friends in their colony. Nobody could miss being coloured by them and of course, they need colour for that. These days it is easy to buy colours from the market but still some people do take up the task of making colours at home, usually from flowers of tesu and palash. These home made colours, have a special fragrance of love in them. The other option is to buy gulal which comes in bright shades of pink, magenta, red, yellow and green. 'Abeer' is made of small crystals or paper like chips of mica. This is mixed with the gulal for a rich shine. Mischievous ones, however, go for silver and gold paints on which no colour could be applied. Whatever be the choice of colour, nobody remains in their original texture at the end of the play. And everybody takes delight looking at the other. Really, the other name of the festival is FUN. And, it is not just children, but the young and the old alike who take delight in this joyous festival of colours. Seniors too, move in their tolis. Their enthusiasm is at times greater than that of their children as they forget the bars of age and follow their hearts. To youth, holi gives a chance to explore the heights of their enthusiasm as they climb the human pyramids to break the pot of buttermilk and to express their love to their beloved by applying colour. For, Holi knows no bars, everybody feels it is their right to enjoy and enjoy they do. Songs, dance, drinks, food everything goes in excess when it is time for Holi. It can be said, "Life turns Colourful" when it is time for Holi.

Today Holi is an excuse for Indians to shed inhibitions and caste differences for a day of spring fever and Big Fun. Teenagers spend the day flirting and misbehaving in the streets, quite often adults males are seen to grab an opportunity to spark colour on girls. Thus the holy message of the festival is charred with the natural flavour.

It's a festival of gaiety but then there are few who make this festival, a festival of evil. They do this by infuriating the strangers by forcefully throwing colours on them; some use colours that are difficult to remove and unsafe for skin and health. Many take it as a day of drinking alcohol but we should not forget that Holi is a festival of triumph of good over evil. We must try to wash away all the evils in our hearts along with the colours and allow the colour of love to stay there forever and ever. This is the true spirit of Holi.

Holy Spirit Bestows Seven Gifts at Confirmation

One of the major aspects of the Sacrament of Confirmation are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that are bestowed on the candidate when they are sealed with the Holy Spirit. The candidate when participating in Confirmation accepts that their mission is to be witnesses of Jesus in their families and communities. And, the reception of those gifts helps each candidate succeed on their mission.

The gifts are wisdom, understanding, knowledge, fortitude, counsel, piety and fear of the Lord are the seven gifts although the gifts will manifest themselves over the candidates lifetime.

The gift of wisdom gives the confirmed the gift to see the worlds though Gods eyes and viewpoint. This will help us to understand the purpose of Gods plan for us and for the world. The candidate also has the ability to formulate a historical perspective and help have an enlightened view of history and how the present and the past work together and affect the mystery of the future. This is also known as speculative reason according to St. Thomas Aquinas, in Summa Theologica.

The gift of knowledge helps the confirmed use thoughtful reflection and contemplation on the mystery of God. It also helps with the mysteries of the Trinity and as well as the Catholic faith, according to the United States Catholic Catechism. This gift also helps draw the candidate to a meditative prayer, meaning the candidate is open for God to lead them while they are just quietly listening. Often this is practiced during Adoration. This is what Aquinas called practical reasoning.

The gift of understanding is to help the candidate learn themselves and how to grow in knowing God. St. Augustine used the prayer "That I May know You, may I know Myself." We are all made in God's image and as we come to know ourselves we also learn about God and who he is. This is also what Aquinas calls common sense.

The gift of fortitude is also known as the courage. The confirmed can used this gift to stand up for Jesus and his teaching. According to Aquinas, this gift is the firmness that is required to do good and to stand up to evil. This gift is more evident when the good or evil is particularly more difficult.

The gift of counsel is also known as right judgment and is the perfection of practical reasoning. And after the candidates learns though research how the candidate applies the knowledge. As this gift grows and we are faced with moral dilemmas we are more apt to make the better or more moral decision, according to Aquinas.

The gift of piety is the reverence and respect we show to the Father. Reverence may be learned from parents and teachers. This gift is often renewed during liturgy where it is a reminder to teach us reverence. Aquinas says at the instigation of the Holy Spirit we pay worship and duty to God as our Father.

And lastly the gift of Fear of the Lord, allows us the awe of the majesty of God. This also is a what makes us grateful wonder of God and his love for the candidate. According to Aquinas this is also the fear of separating themselves from God.
