what does it mean when a picture of the virgin mary falls down?

I believe in signs from a higher power, so this kind of freaked me out when it happened. Just a few moments ago a picture of the virgin mary, its actually a card in a frame my mother in law received called "the miraculous medal". It had a rosary hanging from it and it fell too. It just randomly fell, nothing else just those two items. If anyone can SERIOUSLY the symbolism of this, please let me know, I'm very freaked out by it.
Ok the nail was fine and there its a one story. No one was awake for it but me and my husband. There was just a loud bang and then they were on the ground. I just wanted to know if there was a symbolism to it, not smart ass answers. Thanks!

Yes, Mary had other children. Probably not "right after" because childbirth is very hard on a woman's body and she needs time to recuperate.

old religous medals?

i have some religous medals, that look pretty old. i don't know much about religous figures, so i really don't know what i am looking at. i think one might me of the virgin mary and the other says "o mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee", i think it's a miraculous medal. i am not really sure, what they are or what to do with them, or if they are worth anymoney.

Cinematography and its significance is an aspect of film that is usually overlooked by your average movie goer. Often times when a director is know for consistently maintaining a certain style it is due in part to the cinematographers contribution. Like film editors, cinematographers take a back seat to directors when it comes to the public's perception of each of their significances. Although it is ultimately the directors medium, the cinematographer guides the tone and feel of the film by controlling the aesthetics. This is of course excluding art direction, wardrobe and set design. A beautifully constructed sequence arrests your attention with such command and power, while still displaying a subtle eloquence. This display of the mastery of film is often referred to as something "cinematic". In that moment it is film declaring "I am what I am." The cinematographer plays an instrumental role is deciding what that declaration is going to convey.

A films cinematography can often be so significant that it becomes a character in itself. Films such as The Sheltering Sky, Road to Perdition, and Paranoid Park have such powerful and daring athletics that they help the viewer to characterize each film and ultimately differentiate them from the pack. If you'll notice every film on this list has at least a certain sequence that is ingrained into your psyche because of its overwhelming visual power and emotional significance.

Charles Rosher 1885-1974

Charles Rosher was a two-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer who worked from the early days of silent films through the 1950s. Born in London, he was the first cinematographer to receive an Academy Award, along with 1929 co-winner Karl Struss. Rosher studied photography in his youth but earned a reputation early as a newsreel cameraman, before moving to the United States in 1909. He subsequently found work for David Horsley working in his production company in New Jersey. Because early film was largely restricted to using daylight, Horsley relocated his production company to Hollywood in 1911, taking Rosher with him, and opened the first movie studio there. This made Rosher the first full-time cameraman in Hollywood. In 1913 he went to Mexico to film newsreel footage of Pancho Villa's rebellion. In 1918, he was one of the founders of the American Society of Cinematographers and served as the group's first Vice-President. In the 1920s he was one of the most sought-after cinematographers in Hollywood, and a personal favorite of stars such as Mary Pickford. His work with Karl Struss on F.W. Murnau's 1927 film Sunrise is viewed as a milestone in cinematography. In addition, Rosher also received two Eastman Medals (named for George Eastman), Photoplay magazine's Gold Medal, and the only fellowship ever awarded by the Society of Motion Picture Engineers.

James Wong Howe 1899-1976

James Wong Howe had over 130 films to his credit, spanning from the silent era to color. During the 1930s and 1940s he was considered one of the most sought after cinematographers in Hollywood. He was nominated for ten Academy Awards for cinematography, winning twice. As well as being one of the first cinematographers to use deep focus photography, Howe pioneered techniques to augment eyes on B&W film, early dolly techniques, handheld camera techniques and shooting by unusual light sources, such as by candlelight on The Molly Maguires.

Conrad L. Hall 1926-2003

Beginning with films such as Cool Hand Luke and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Hall helped liberate approaches to filming by making, as Sight and Sound puts it, "making virtues of mistakes". Blemishes such as the sun hitting the lens, dirt getting on the lens, or other seeming distractions which would have necessitated reshoots in the past, but Hall's approach exemplified the new wave of American cinema and helped set a template for gritty, independent films. But Hall also proved he could handle more ‘pristine' pictures, photographing films such American Beauty later in his career. He won his first Oscar in 1969 for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and then would have to wait 30 years for his next, for American Beauty. His third Oscar was awarded to him posthumously for Road to Perdition. As well as that, he was nominated a further seven times during his life.

Christopher Doyle Born 1952

Though born in Australia, Doyle made his mark by photographing Asian films, especially the work of Hong Kong director Wong Kar-Wai. His work with the director, particularly the films Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love and 2046, is lauded for their vivid splashes of colors and high saturation, and he is considered one of the most important architects of Asian New Wave cinema. He is also one of the few "superstar" cinematographers, whose reputation is often higher than the directors he works with.

Gordon Willis Born 1931

Nicknamed ‘The Prince of Darkness' for his penchant for using rich blacks and dark interiors, most famously in The Godfather films for which he is best known, Gordon Willis is famed for his innovative cinematography which has garnered him two Oscar nominations and heaps of respect. His work on The Godfather films is legendary, and his innovations include pioneering the use of warm, fuzzy, amber glows to represent nostalgic scenes of the past in The Godfather Part II, and the unique recreation of 1920s photography for Woody Allen's Zelig.

Gregg Toland1904-1948

Gregg Toland was not with us long, but it is a credit to his brilliance that he is so revered today. Toland was nominated five times for the Best Cinematography Oscar during a seven year golden period which lasted from 1936 to 1942, but it is his collaboration with Orson Welles on Citizen Kane that is most remembered. Though he didn't create deep focus cinematography, he perfected it in Citizen Kane, allowing characters in the fore and background to be shot in focus at the same time. In fact, much of the film's visual and cinematographic genius – low angles, high contrast, dark shadows – though often credited to Welles, was largely Toland's doing. Welles later acknowledged that Toland was advising him on camera placement and lighting effects secretly so the young director would not be embarrassed in front of the highly experienced crew. So indebted was he to Toland's work, that Welles insisted that their names appear together on the end credits. Later on, Toland worked on Disney's Song of the South, which combined live action with animation.

Sven Nykvist 1922-2006

As Ingmar Bergman's choice cinematographer, Nykvist was given the unenviable task of transforming the Swedish auteur's startling, often surreal, images into reality in front of the camera. Despite this, Nykvist was noted for his subtlety and simplicity, favouring naturalistic lighting to complement Bergman's slow, paced style of storytelling. He was unpretentious and often hidden behind his towering director, but Nykvist was still acknowledged for his work with two Academy Awards for Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander. Nykvist also worked with directors such as Roman Polanski, Woody Allen and Andrei Tarkovsky. He was the first European cinematographer to join the American Society of Cinematographers, and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the ASC in 1996.

Vittorio Storaro Born 1940

Vittorio Storaro (born 24 June 1940 in Rome) is a three-time Academy Award winning Italian cinematographer. He is most famous for his work on Apocalypse Now (his first Oscar), where he was given free reign by Francis Ford Coppola to photograph the film's acclaimed visual look. He went on to win Oscars for Reds and The Last Emperor, which was directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, his most frequent collaborator. Storaro is widely regarded as a master cinematographer with a sophisticated philosophy largely inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's theory of colors, which focuses in part on the psychological effects different colors have and the way in which colors influence our perceptions of different situations. With his son, Fabrizio Storaro, he created the Univisium format system to unify all future theatrical and television movies into one respective aspect ratio of 2.00:1.

Sergei Urusevsky 1908-1974

Though nowhere near as prolific as others on this list, Urusevsky has earned an almost mythic status among cinematographers due to his work with Russian director Mikhail Kalatozov on such films as I am Cuba and The Cranes are Flying. His nearly unbelievable combination of deep focus, acrobatic tracking shots, subjective perspective and other remarkable cinematographic trickery was so ahead of its time that it wouldn't be seen in the west until over a decade later. Unfortunately, his Kaltozov collaborations were largely buried by the Soviet propaganda machine, and have only recently been restored thanks to acknowledged admirers such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola. His spectacular camerawork, which often distracted from the proper focus of the scene, was defended by Urusevsky, remarking that, "It has never interested me, as cameraman, to just register what is going on in front of the camera.""

Kazuo Miyagawa 1908-1999

Miyagawa is arguably the most important cinematographer in Japanese history, having worked with a who's who of Japanese auteurs, including Akira Kurosawa, Yasujiro Ozu, and Kenji Mizoguchi. He is perhaps most famous for his work on Rashomon, where he was the first person to point a camera directly into sunlight (utilising years of study on light exposure). He was also known for using multiple camera setups for scenes, and acclaimed for his contrast of sweeping tracking shots and sharp close-ups. Other innovations on the film include using mirrors to reflect natural light and using dyed black water as rain, to make it appear more vivid on camera. He was also a master of genres, working on comedies (The Rickshaw Man), samurai films (the Zatoichi films), as wells as overseeing 164 cameramen and using over 234 different lenses for Tokyo Olympiad, often compared with Leni Riefenstahl's Olympia as one of the greatest Olympics documentaries.

Why Watson's Little Albert became the most distorted study in the history of psychology

Among all psychological studies, Little Albert study (article's URL is below), conducted by Dr. John B. Watson, APA (American Psychological Association) President, and Rosalie Rayner in 1920, is the most widely cited experiment in psychological textbooks. It is likely the most distorted and misrepresented psychological study as well, with numerous small and large mistakes found in general textbooks and more professional books written by prominent psychotherapists and leading psychology theorists. Dr. Ben Harris summarized some of these distortions in his article Whatever Happened to Little Albert? (B. Harris, 1979) published in the American Psychologist. He simply appealed to stick to facts as one may guess from the title.

The total number of published distortions can be measured by hundreds. What are their possible psychological causes? Why do most authors try to confuse their readers? Which real problems were and are still hidden in this study?

While various details of the Little Albert experiment are scrupulously investigated, no study of authors' motivation was so far provided. What were the driving forces and reasons behind this monumental psychological experiment?

Scientists, as well as school pupils, are driven by their passion to find truth and solve certain problems. So called problem solving skills are among the key parameters of any person. Finding solutions to problems, after long search, is a cherished and exceptionally positive experience that serves as a driving force virtually for all truth-seekers. This observation also indicates that there is a certain element of pleasure (tension release?) in finding solutions. Then, when a certain fundamental problem is solved, the solution should bring relief not only to the authors but also for many other, related problems.

The original problem and its solution

Let us start the analysis with this simple question. What was the problem with little Albert at 9 to 11 months of age during the experiment? Before the study,

"He was on the whole stolid and unemotional…the infant was confronted suddenly and for the first time successively with a white rat, a rabbit, a dog, a monkey, with masks with and without hair, cotton wool, burning newspapers, etc… Manipulation was the most usual reaction called out. At no time did this infant ever show fear in any situation. These experimental records were confirmed by the casual observations of the mother and hospital attendants. No one had ever seen him in a state of fear and rage. The infant practically never cried" (Watson & Rayner, 1920).

This Albert's personal problem was brilliantly solved by the President of American Psychological Association and his assistant. How? Albert developed lasting fear in relation to the rat, the rabbit, the dog, and the sealskin coat; a "negative" response to the mask and Watson's hair; and a mild response to the cotton. This amazing accomplishment was achieved by producing a loud sound behind Albert's back by striking a suspended steel bar with a hammer when the baby touched the rat or, later, noticed it.

The previously "boring" life of little Albert, who was an explorer, investigator, inventor, challenger, and discoverer (whatever we was confronted with, suddenly and for the first time, animals, masks with and without hair, and even burning newspapers, "manipulation was the most usual reaction called out"), after several conditionings, was enriched by the following new and fascinating responses:

"- jumped violently and fell forward, burying his face in the mattress;

- fell to right side and rested upon hands, with head turned away from rat;

- puckered face, whimpered and withdrew body sharply to the left;

- fell over immediately to right side and began to whimper;

- began to cry;

- turned sharply to the left, fell over on left side, raised himself on all fours and began to crawl away so rapidly that he was caught with difficulty before reaching the edge of the table;

- whimpered immediately, withdrew right hand and turned head and trunk away;

- leaned over to the left side as far away from the rat as possible, then fell over, getting up on all fours and scurrying away as rapidly as possible…"

(Watson & Rayner, 1920).

Although Watson and Rayner knew one month in advance that Albert would be taken from the hospital, no de-conditioning was planned or executed.

Which other Albert's problems were solved?

Dozens of psychology textbooks claim that in the Little Albert study the authors tried to answer 3 questions: (1) Can an infant be conditioned to fear an animal that appears simultaneously with a loud, fear arousing sound? (2) Would such fear transfer to other animals or to inanimate objects? (3) How long would such fears persist?(e.g.: B. Harris, 1979)

Furthermore, as textbooks on psychology and more professional psychology books claim and assume, there were no other effects. (If there were some, the textbooks would definitely describe them.)

Would such an infant be also conditioned to accompanied smells, sounds, colours, weather, buildings, room shapes, objects that attracted his attention, people met before and after, clothes he worn, foods he ate, etc.? Obviously, yes. In my view, there is no such thing as "The infant was conditioned to fear fury objects" and nothing else happened.

Moreover, even Albert's relationship with the mother should be affected. How to check that? Imagine a study with the following design.

Choose 200 solid unemotional infants, with no fear at all ("No one had ever seen them in a state of fear and rage, the infants practically never cried", as in the 1920 study). Divide these cool explorers on 2 groups. Send 100 of them to experience the same what Albert got. Then compare these experimental infants with the control group who were in the crap-free environment. Later measure their eye contact with their mothers, proximity, somatic changes (heart rate, blood pressure, galvanic skin response, etc.) before and after the experiments. What would be logical to expect?

If you are not convinced about the reality of the impact, think again about previously absolutely composed never-crying infants (discoverers and creators) who in the lab are to experience the following reactions for the first time in their lives:

"- the reaction was pronounced. Negative responses began at once. He leaned as far away from the animal as possible, whimpered, then burst into tears. When the rabbit was placed in contact with him he buried his face in the mattress, then got up on all fours and crawled away, crying as he went. This was a most convincing test.

- straightened up immediately, fell over to the opposite side and turned his head away. He then began to cry.
- withdrew immediately to the left side and began to fret. Coat put close to him on the left side, he turned immediately, began to cry and tried to crawl away on all fours.

- fell over to left side, got up on all fours and started to crawl away. On this occasion there was no crying, but strange to say, as he started away he began to gurgle and coo, even while leaning far over to the left side to avoid the rat.

- began to whimper, shaking head from side to side, holding hands as far away from the animal as possible.
- a violent negative reaction appeared. He began to whimper, turned to one side, fell over and started to get up on all fours.

- turned away but did not fall over. Cried. Hands moved as far away from the animal as possible. Whimpered as long as the dog was present"

(Watson & Rayner, 1920).

Furthermore, measure and compare sleep and digestion parameters of 100 experimental and 100 control infants before and after the experiment. What would be logical to expect here?

When these infants grew up, one may continue measuring the somatic responses of experimental subjects by reading neutral words and words, which could associate with the study (names of the people involved, building, lab, street, university, city, state, etc.). Have anybody heard or seen people who run away from the city, state, or country they lived in for decades or years only because of some unresolved issue or past conflict?

Development of chronic conditions (diseases) can also be measured years later. Would Dr. Watson contribute in this area too?

Hence, there were many other Albert's problems which were successfully solved during this study. Indeed, it would be silly to expect that the new emotional reactions (crying, cooing, whimpering, sobbing, gurgling, running away, etc.) were exclusively confined to the walls of the laboratory, when seeing rats, rabbits, dogs, etc. and only on emotional level.

What was the likely real-life reason why the mother of Little Albert took him away from the "scientists" before the completion of the study?

What was the general outcome of the study?

What did Albert acquire, as a result of this experiment? If previously he could successfully deal with various stressful objects and animals, after the study this ability disappeared. Hence, the study affected his ability to cope with stress and this is the central parameter that defines, according to numerous dictionaries, psychological trauma. Therefore, little Albert got a psychological trauma.

How can the activities of the authors be defined?

Dr. Watson obviously had numerous choices which types of studies to conduct. He was not forced to scare the infant. He was driven, as any scientist, by the well known pleasure principle. Where did he find this pleasure?

Again, he took a cool and composed infant ("No one had ever seen him in a state of fear and rage") and generated the following reactions (these are again the phrases, different ones, from the original Watson and Rayner's study),

"Whimpered with arms held high, fell over backward and had to be caught.
Santa Claus mask. Withdrawal, gurgling, then slapped at it without touching. When his hand was forced to touch it, he whimpered and cried. His hand was forced to touch it two more times. He whimpered and cried on both tests. He finally cried at the mere visual stimulus of the mask.
Fur coat. Wrinkled his nose and withdrew both hands, drew back his whole body and began to whimper as the coat was put nearer. Again there was the strife between withdrawal and the tendency to manipulate. Reached tentatively with left hand but drew back before contact had been made. In moving his body to one side his hand accidentally touched the coat. He began to cry at once, nodding his head in a very peculiar manner (this reaction was an entirely new one).

The rat was then allowed to crawl against his chest. He first began to fret and then covered his eyes with both hands.
Dog. The dog was very active. Albert fixated it intensely for a few seconds, sitting very still. He began to cry"

(Watson & Rayner, 1920).

We can infer from these reactions, that Dr. Watson, the leader of the study, derived pleasure by producing fear or inflicting cruelty on the previously fear-free infant. Many popular dictionaries say that sadism is pleasure derived from inflicting cruelty on another person. It is not important that Dr. Watson was the President of the APA. He could be a super Honorable President of whatever organization; he could have support and encouragement of hundreds of other Presidents; he could have ultra rewards and medals of many other organization and Universities. None of these facts changes the nature of what was practically done and how it should be labelled.

Note that I do not claim that Dr. Watson was a pathological sadist. Four years later, with Dr. Watson's advice, Mary Cover Jones, his associate, desensitized a three-year-old boy who was scared of rabbits. She paired the rabbit with a pleasurable activity and the child's fear gradually disappeared (Jones, 1924).

Which Dr. Watson's problems were solved

Coming back to the question, "Which problems did this study solve?", clearly, Albert's behaviour and reactions were reasonable and avoidance of sudden and loud noises, which would scare any adult as well, was a sensible response. As about Dr. Watson, we can imagine that he observed how an infant, like Albert, could successfully and quickly learn new life skills and explore the world, while being cool and business-oriented (or "unemotional", as the study described Albert). Probably, this was not the case with Dr. Watson. He likely found that his progress, in his exploration of the world and human psychology, became limited or even stagnated. (Indeed, he could not even predict the scope of Albert's conditioning.) It could look frustrating to Dr. Watson: an infant explores and challenges the world, while Dr. Watson himself was unable to do the same!

Dr. Watson realized, that he could modify or manipulate the behaviour of the infant, not in the way to help the infant in his development, but to generate the same infant's reactions in relation to the world, as Dr. Watson had. Hence, by making Albert frustrated and afraid, Dr. Watson created from Albert an emotional buddy, who would also have similar to Watson's reactions and, later, a similar mindset (inability to cope with the world should gradually affect Albert's general world outlook). Hence, Dr. Watson also solved the problem of his loneliness and isolation.

Moreover, in this emotional union with the infant, Dr. Watson acquired a domineering position since the infant, apart from becoming Watson's emotional colleague, also became like a marionette or string-puppet secretly manipulated by Dr. Watson from behind.

According to his writing, Dr. Watson's frustration with life became about ten times stronger a decade later since he demanded more healthy children for his "studies" (or to displace his frustration). In his 1930's book Behaviorism, Dr. Watson made the folowing famous claim, "Give me a dozen healthy infants, well-formed, and my own specified world to bring them up in and I'll guarantee to take any one at random and train him to become any type of specialist I might select—doctor, lawyer, artist, merchant-chief and, yes, even beggar-man and thief, regardless of his talents, penchants, tendencies, abilities, vocations, and race of his ancestors" (Watson, 1930).

Now we know why Dr. Watson was asking about "healthy infants" (or infants who were originally explorers, discoverers, and inventors) and which type of people will be produced by his method. Since all these traumatized people would require an army of psychologists to care about them, we can also hypothesize why Dr. Watson became the President of the American Psychological Association.

Final remarks

Dr. Watson and Rayner, together with modern psychology textbooks authors, failed to understand all ramifications and correctly label the essence of the Little Albert experiment. These people were in the state of confusion and could not get even a simple conditioning in its full flavour. The state of foolishness present in modern psychology is even more obvious from the fact that in 1957 the American Psychological Association awarded Dr. John Watson the gold medal for his "contributions" to the field of psychology, while modern textbooks continue to distort this monumental psychological study. This situation testifies that modern psychology, especially social psychology, has so far failed to be a practically useful science that promotes piece, cooperation and social wellbeing of humanity.

Does anyone else feel like a females virginity is way over hyped and OVERRATED?

I've had my day of de-virgitizing girls, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Virgins are horrible in the bedroom, and it takes them forever to get halfway decent at sex. They squirm and don't let you get full strokes in, they try to push you back so you can't plow in and put in work, and they make these little squealing sounds when you barely even get the tip in. I could never go back to virgins if I"m looking for a fun time in the sheets. I don't have time to teach. These days I like the hoe's sults, tramps , tralups, floozies, and all that. I mean its cool to be a lady in the streets but I need a freak in the sheets. I knew this one girl, and all the did was brag about Oh I'm a virgin...blah blah....bish who cares, good for you, you want a medal?

I'm proud to be a virgin. I don't want STDs or unwanted pregnancies. I'm sure if you end up in any of those situations you won't feel so high and mighty. Sex is supposed to hurt the first time a girl has it that's why they are probably pushing you back. And what's so cool about you taking away virginity and bragging about it on yahoo answers? Do you want a medal for that? Sex overall is overrated and hyped. Because that's all you hear about in music and see in the media. Btw, did you get insulted when I asked you that question in that other question you asked. That's why you reported me? You know it's true. Truth hurts doesn't it.

Question for Catholics. Found a miraculous medal during a painful time.?

We've been trying to have a baby, and unfortunately have miscarried twice since July with the last miscarriage being this week. During the second pregnancy, my Catholic neighbor suggested I pray to Mary as we have been very worried. I did pray, and to my surprise, began to feel a bit of comfort. I do pray often, but never to Saints. This week I found a medal in a parking lot by my car - which I later learned was the Miraculous Medal of Mary.

I'm interested in hearing from Catholics. Do you think this is coincidence? Do you think God works like this? Is he or Mary trying to tell me something or comfort me?

Before I answer that, please consider this : there is a distinct difference between the definition of "pray" and "praise" . We praise God and God is the One that answers our prayers (our talking to God/saints). We worship /praise God as our creator and the Supreme being. But just as we can ask our friend to pray (to God) for us and our needs; we can also pray (talk to/ask - not praise) to any soul that made it to heaven - saint and ask them to also pray to God for us/loved ones. That is the idea of the intercession of the saints. It does NOT mean that we feel that we HAVE to "go through" the saints to get the message to God. One of the ideas of asking the saints to also pray is to pray (talk to) a saint that dealt with the same kind of problem/dilemma in their earthly life as you need help with. A saint that would have particular empathy for your desire to have a child is Saint Anne. Saint Anne was married to Joachim and they were older and wanted children but were believed to be too old to have a baby. But they prayed and they became the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. St. Anne would understand of your longing to have a child and would pray diligently for you (and she'd probably ask her daughter to also pray for you too). To answer you question directly is to suggest that you investigate the miracles that are associated with Mary's appearances at Lourdes, France or at Fatima, Portugal. Remember that the saints and Mary don't answer your prayers - they pray with you and for you - but God answers your prayers. But consider this : whose requests would Jesus most readily respond to ? Maybe His mother? She was the occasion for Jesus working His first miracle (water into wine at the marriage of Cana) even though He said, "My time has not yet come" (to work miracles) - but He did it anyway because SHE asked. Always remember that if prayers are answered seemingly in response to Mary's prayers, she points to God/Jesus as the source. Anyway, don't confuse "pray" with "praise". "Praise" is for God alone and "prayer" (is just a word for talking to someone). We may praise God in prayer but all prayer (like to the saints) is not praise.

Catholics, I need the dates of obligations...I lost my blackberry and so on...?

Last saturday I lost my blackberry and it had ALL of the dates of obligations and special dates ]Ex. novena To Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal] and so on...I was wondering if anyone can tell me where I can find those dates, For some reason I cant seem to get them from EWTN..I don't know why. Thank you!

Holy Days of Obligation are feasts on which Catholics are required to assist at Mass.

In the United States these are:
• Christmas, the Nativity of Jesus, December 25
• Mary Mother of God, January 1
• Ascension of the Lord, forty days after Easter
• Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15
• All Saints' Day, November 1
• Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, December 8

By the way, every Sunday is considered a Holy Day of Obligation. Therefore Holy Days that are always on Sundays like Easter are not listed.

Outside the United States, variations of Holy Days may occur.

1) Does the Catholic Church teach that God wishes the salvation of all? Yes

2) Does the Catholic Church teach that salvation was made possible for the world through the cross of Jesus Christ? Yes

3) Does the Catholic Church believe that there is salvation for those who do not know Jesus Christ? Yes

4) Does the Catholic Church believe that the salvation of those who do not know Christ is somehow made possible by Christ, whether or not those saved have ever heard of him? Yes

5) Does the Catholic Church believe that this puts all those saved in some relationship to the Catholic Church? Yes

So, why be Catholic?

The Roman Catholic Church has remained focused and united on the lordship of Jesus Christ since it was founded by Christ almost 2000 years ago. She entails the wisdom of the Apostles; She encompasses the teachings of the Early Church Fathers; and She wraps herself around the Scriptures—which She handed to the world.

This is where it all began. Divine Incarnation. Divine Salvation. Divine Love. The Trinity. These Christian verities originated in the Church. Jesus founded the Church on St. Peter, and the Roman Catholic Church is still the church of St. Peter.

Catholicism is not merely a checklist of rules. Catholicism is Christianity. Catholicism is His-tory. Catholicism seeks to bring all to salvation. Catholicism strives to teach and reach all souls. For in the end, Jesus is the point where time and eternity meet. It is the Church’s mission to see that the Kingdom of God is fostered, encouraged, and nurtured.

The Catholic view is a world view.

“Catholics live in an enchanted world, a world of statutes and holy water, stained glass and votive candles, saints and religious medals, rosary beads and holy pictures. But these Catholic paraphernalia are mere hints of a deeper and more pervasive religious sensibility which inclines Catholics to see the Holy lurking in creation. As Catholics, we find our houses and our world haunted by a sense that the objects, events, and persons of daily life are revelations of grace.” Andrew Greeley.

The Catholic view is communitarian—not individualistic. It is not “me and Jesus”, but rather it is “Jesus and our community”.

Catholics are optimists. Catholics do not believe that man is evil. Catholics believe that men sin, and that we are sinful, but that we were made in the image of God and thus we are inclined to the Good which is by definition God. We cannot be Good without God’s grace, but we have the free-will to readily accept or reject his offer of Grace.

This spills over into how we see everything. Catholics see God in all; in nature and in man, God is in all.

· The Catholic Church is a sacramental church. Its expresses its worship and relationship to God through God’s creations: bread, wine, water, oil, incense, bells, and gestures. It expresses the mysterious, the unknown, and the transcendental through the reality of nature.

Additionally, there different sacraments at certain important times in our lives.

Flannery O’Connor, the great Southern author, when asked to defend the Catholic belief that Christ is truly present in the bread and wine during the Eucharist, and not just a symbol as most Protestants (and lamentably some Catholics) believe, said the following:

‘”Well, if it’s a symbol, to hell with it.’ That was all the defense I was capable of but I realize now that this is all I will ever be able to say about it, outside a story, except that it is the center of existence for me; all the rest of life is expendable.”

“The sacraments sanctify through themselves, and not through men.” St. Augustine

· The Church expresses itself through Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture. The Bible was written by the Church for the Church. The Church existed before the Bible; she made the Bible; she selected its books, and she preserved it.

“I would not believe the Gospel, did not the authority of the Church move me.” St. Augustine

The Catholic does not come to Christ through scripture alone (sola scriptura), but through both his/her sacramental and personal incorporation in the living Church and through the study of Sacred Scripture.

· The Church is a doctrinal church. She has a set of beliefs. You know where She stands. She is proudly dogmatic—She stands resolute by Her orthodoxy. She believes—as She always has-- that there must be a final authority on the Word made flesh.

While acknowledging that God loves all people and grants them the possibility of being saved (cf Timothy 2.4), the Church believes that God has established Christ as the one mediator and that she herself has been established as the universal sacrament of salvation…It is necessary to keep these two truths together, namely, the real possibility of salvation in Christ for all mankind and the necessity of the Church for salvation. Both of these truths help us understand the one mystery of salvation, so that we can come to know God’s mercy and our own responsibility. John Paul II (the Great), Redemptoris Missio.

· The Church is authoritative, not authoritarian. The Church teaches us to think with the Church (sentire cum ecclesia).

We think for ourselves not to come up with our own teaching but to make the Church teaching our own.

St. Augustine expressed the authentic Catholic spirit regarding sentire cum ecclesia when he said:

No one believes anything unless one first thought it believable. Everything that is believed is believed after being preceded by thought. Not everyone who thinks believes, since many think in order not to believe; but everyone who believes thinks, thinks in believing and believes in thinking.

And Father John Neuhaus put it quite nice when he said:

“The Church begins with thinking. Faithful assent is not a matter of standing to attention, clicking one’s heel, and saluting the appearance of every document from Rome. Rather, it is a matter of thinking for oneself so that I can think with the Church, the prior assumption being that the Church possesses a teaching charism and authority that warrants my assent.”

Yes, there will be difficulties in understanding what the Church teaches—especially in our postmodern society. But as John Henry Cardinal Newman said:

“Ten thousand difficulties do not add up to doubt.”

“Catholic doctrine and discipline may be walls; but they are the wall of the playground.” G.K. Chesterton

· The Church is hierarchical. “The Church is from the apostles, the apostles from Christ, Christ from God.” Tertullian, 2nd Century Church Father.

· The Church believes in the divine importance of the Mother of God—Mary.

The Church cherishes spirituality, mysticism, and all manner of diverse religiosity. The Church is a big tent.

The Church is a rainbow filled with many different--yet beautiful in their own way—Christian individuals.
