The answer is that "Saint" originally meant "Holy". So "Saint Michael" means "Holy Michael" which kinda fits for an archangel.

In English, a "Saint" is usually a Christian of special holiness- i.e. a person. But things can be holy, as well as people This is usually seen in other languages. For example there is "La Iglesia del Santo Sepulcro" which is translated into English as "The Church of the Holy Sepulchre" - but you'll see that the "Santo" (Saint) bit is translated into English as "Holy" In other cases it gets translated as "Saint". The Bible Speaks About A Battle Between An Egyptian King And Someone Else. The King Of Jerusalem Decided To Join That Battle. He Was A Righteous King. Yet That Battle Was Not His To Fight. Jerusalem's King Was Continuously Warned Not To Proceed. That King Trusted In His Own "Righteousness" Instead Of God's. He Was A Righteous King, But God Allowed The King To Die In That Battle (Which Was Not His To Fight).

So Satan Offered Jesus The World. We Have A Choice. We Can Feed Into This "Secret Knowledge", "Higher Sciences", Or "God/Goddess Human" Mentality Or We Can Pursue A Spiritual Life.

The Choice We Make Will Affect Us At Armageddon (And Possibly In The Next Life To Come).

We Should Now Have A Better Understanding Of Earth's History. All Of Earth's History Has Been Manipulated By The Watchers And The Keepers.

Pinewood derby

Origins

Cubmaster Don Murphy organized the first pinewood derby, held on May 15, 1953 in Manhattan Beach, California by Pack 280c. Murphy's son was too young to participate in the popular Soap Box Derby races, so he came up with the idea of racing miniature wood cars. The cars had the same gravity-powered concept as the full-size Soap Box Derby cars, but were much smaller and easier to build. After Don Murphy's first race in 1953 the Los Angeles County Department of Recreation copied the pinewood derby with Murphy's permission.

In the 1980s, the design of the block was changed from a cutout block, consistent with a 1940's style front-engined Indy 500 car, to a solid block. The tires were also changed from narrow, hard plastic, to wider "slicks".

Construction

The Scout is given a block of wood made of pine with two notches for wheels, four plastic wheels and four nails. The finished car must use all nine pieces, must not exceed a certain weight (usually five ounces), must not exceed a certain length and must fit on the track used by that particular scout pack.

Blocks can be whittled with a hand knife or a band saw or Dremel carving tool for major shaping. Decals can be bought at scout shops or hobby shops. It is also possible to use standard model decals to replicate actual racing cars such as Richard Petty's 1970 Plymouth Superbird, shown at right. The original style is based on open wheel cars, however, fender or body kits are available, or wheels can simply be placed outboard of the body.

Other than the previous basic design rules, the Cub Scout is able to carve and decorate the car as he chooses. Many Cub Scouts also add weights to the final design to bring the car to the maximum allowable weight; coins, glue-in lead pieces, and melted lead are common ways to add weight. Cars typically vary from unfinished blocks to whimsical objects, to accurate replicas of actual cars. The fastest cars tend to resemble low doorstops, with weight at the rear. Graphite is usually the only lubricant allowed, and it often helps to polish the provided nails.

The idea behind the pinewood derby is for the parent, usually the father, but occasionally the mother or grandparent, to spend time helping the child design, carve, paint, add weights, and tune the final car. However, it is often the case that the parent takes over the construction of the car, an aspect of the event that was lampooned in the 2005 film Down and Derby, and also in a 2009 episode of South Park. The quest for a fast car supports a cottage industry that supplies modified wheels, axles, and blocks as well as videos and instruction books. While a pinewood derby car kit costs around $4, a set of modified wheels and axles can sell for more than ten times that amount. These aftermarket items are legal under some Pack rules since the parts originally came from an official BSA kit. Complete cars can be purchased on eBay and elsewhere for around $100 to $200. Although these cars violate the spirit of the event, if not the rules, enforcement can be difficult.

Model manufacturer Revell was licensed by the BSA to produce pinewood derby kits with a release in December 2009.

Competition

The track usually has two to six lanes and slopes down to the ground, since the cars are powered by gravity. Tracks may be owned by the pack or rented. The race is run in heats, giving every car the chance to run on each lane. The racers can be grouped with others from the same rank (Tiger Cubs, Wolf Cubs, Bear Cubs, etc.), or can compete against the pack as a whole.

The first, second, and third place winners usually receive ribbons, medals or trophies. Some packs also award on the basis of car design. The first place race winners get to advance to the district level, then each of the district-wide race winners get to race each other from across the entire council.

As the popularity of the pinewood derby grew, other organizations adopted the concept. Pinewood derby is a registered registered trademark of the BSA, so most use different names. Each derby has slightly different rules for making and racing their cars.

Awana has the Awana Grand Prix.

Christian Service Brigade uses the name Shape N Race Derby.

Royal Ambassadors have RA Racers.

Royal Rangers use a different kit with screw axles and dowel rod axle supports.

Scouts Canada has the kub kar rally for Cub Scouts and beaver buggies for Beaver Scouts.

YMCA chule cars use the same kit as the Royal Rangers.

Valve cover racing is an event at some car shows using vehicles made from valve covers.

Car track

The forces propelling a pinewood derby car are gravity and inertia, the opposing forces are friction and air drag. Therefore, car modifications are aimed at maximizing the potential energy in the car design and minimizing the air drag and the friction that occurs when the wheel spins on the axle, contacts the axle head or car body, or contacts the track guide rail. Friction due to air drag is a minor, although not insignificant, factor. The wheel tread can be sanded or lathed and the inner surface of the hub can be coned to minimize the contact area between the hub and body. Polishing the wheel, especially the inner hub, with a plastic polish can also reduce friction. Often one front wheel is raised slightly so that it does not contact the track and add to the rolling resistance. Axles are filed or lathed to remove the burr and crimp marks and polished smooth. More extensive modifications involve tapering the axle head and cutting a notch to minimize the wheel-to-axle contact area. Note that packs can establish additional rules for what, if any, modifications are allowed. In some areas, no changes can be made to the axles or wheels.

A second consideration is the rotational energy stored in the wheels. The pinewood derby car converts gravitational potential energy into translational kinetic energy (speed) plus rotational energy. Heavier wheels have a greater moment of inertia and their spinning takes away energy that would otherwise contribute to the speed of the car. A standard wheel has a mass of 3.6 g, but this can be reduced to as little as 1 g by removing material from the inside of the wheel. A raised wheel can reduce the rotational energy up to one-quarter, but this advantage is less with a bumpy track.

A proper lubricant, typically graphite powder, is essential. Wheel alignment is important both to minimize wheel contact with the axle head and body as well as to limit the contact between the wheels and guide rail as the car travels down the track. The center of mass of a typical car is low and slightly ahead of the rear axle, which helps the car track straight as well as providing a slight advantage due to the additional gravitational potential energy.

Alicante - a charming city on the Spanish coast

Alicante – an ancient port on the Spanish coast – is today one of the most vibrant touristic places in Spain and its Mediterranean coast. Surrounded by kilometres long sandy beaches and distant rocky hills, Alicante offers a true Spanish flavour. Here you can experience a dynamical balance between a contemporary lifestyle and a rich historical heritage. Both modern shopping malls and extraordinary museums and castles are worth visiting. Several hundreds thousands tourists come to Alicante each year attracted by its friendly atmosphere and great holidays opportunities. The weather is excellent all year round, the beaches are stunning and the colorful cultural events simply cannot be missed.

One of the first things you will notice in Alicante is that the city is full of diverse bars, pubs and restaurants. That is so typical for Spain. In almost every street, there is a place to have a snack or take a coffee. Most of Alicante restaurants offer you delicious Mediterranean dishes in a typical Spanish atmosphere. There is a variety of traditional seafood, the famous Spanish jam, tasty potato tortillas or celebrated paella alicantina. And, of course, the excellent Spanish wine! But, be aware that you need time to fully enjoy your dinner and the evening. Very often, you must make a reservation in advance, check menus and prepare yourself for delicious traditional food and unforgettable night.

Later on, take a walk along our favourite seafront promenade – Explanada. You will easily recognize it by its mosaic pavement forming a repeating three-colored geometric pattern imitating sea waves. Along Explanada, there are several rows of palm trees separating its pathways and forming a good shade. Its numerous restaurants and pizzerias are ideal places to have dinner. Explanada promenade is always full of people, no matter the time. Even very late in the evening you can see a lot of families walking along it, with their children playing around. Do not be surprised to see a lot of older people enjoying the night. Youngsters start parting at one or two o`clock in the morning and rush into the numerous bars in the Old Town. Once the bars are closed at four o´clock, the party continues in the discos of Alicante harbour until the sunrise.

During the day, take a walk and visit fabulous Alicante castles. They are great sightseeing opportunities, which you simply can not avoid. Both of our castles - Castle of Saint Barbara (Santa Barbara) and the Castle of San Fernando - are surrounded by wonderful parks, which stand in a harmonic relation with the nature. You can also enjoy breathtaking views over the city and its harbor. Do not forget to take a camera with you - your will add a lot of great photos to your collection.

Little Masterpieces At Olympia International Art

The International Art and Antiques Fair is held each year at the Olympia Exhibition Hall, Kensington, west London. I attended, as I do every year, excited, hoping to find some small treasure. My interest is Chinese art and antiques, which I have bought and sold, and collected for more than thirty years. I try to visit most of the Art and Antiques fairs in the UK and some in Europe and the US each year.

From a Chinese art point of view Olympia was a disappointment for me. Although I saw a few interesting pieces, the objects I would have liked to buy were too expensive or restored. I was resigned to leaving empty-handed. Not only empty-handed, disappointed, because I had not been really excited by anything I had seen and I had walked miles. Exhausted I headed for a coffee shop.

Unable to find a seat in the coffee shop, I sat on a long bench opposite a stand selling silver. Although I occasionally buy Chinese silver to sell, I have never been interested in collecting silver, always seeing it as too bright and needing too much attention to keep it that way. I rarely look at silver dealers stands, but as I sipped my coffee I looked at the objects this dealer was selling and quickly realised that many of them were much more than just silver. Gilded, silver beakers, tankards and large covered cups that looked like pineapples mingled with religious objects: a gilded monstrance, a rock crystal cross and various reliquaries. None of these objects were ordinary and they were all eighteenth century or earlier.

The man selling these items lifted various pieces out of the cabinets, cheerfully, giving information in excellent English with an accent I did not recognise. I looked at the name above the stand: Peter Szuhay - B59.

Somebody asked the price of a beautiful rhino-horn cup with a gilded, silver foot. I know nothing about European rhino-horn works of art, so when the potential buyer left and I had finished my coffee, I asked Mr Szuhay if he would show it to me.

We chatted about the cup, now standing between us on top of a glass showcase filled with jewellery and I discover that Mr Szuhay is Hungarian, has lived in London for over thirty years and has a permanent stand in Grays Antique Market, Davies Street, in London's West End, near Bond Street underground station. He is a leading expert on Continental silver and works of art. He showed me various beautiful pieces early silver, mentioning the famous towns of Augsburg and Nuremberg, of which, even a Chinese art dealer has heard. He also has an interest in later silver and he showed me some 19th century Russian silver and a magnificent 20th century silver fish-server by the Scandinavian master silversmith, Georg Jensen.

I noticed that, what I had initially dismissed as jewellery, in the showcase beneath the cup, was in fact an array of beautifully carved stone cameos and intaglios. I am used to seeing shells carved into portraits, mounted in brooches, usually from Italy and dating from the mid-nineteenth century until quite recently, but these pieces were something quite different and very exciting.

By now we were on first name terms and Peter showed me a selection of these carved stones, dating from the late nineteenth century back to Rome in the third century AD. Exquisite, tiny works of art, some signed by sixteenth century master carvers. We were interrupted and while Peter sold a Chinese silver box, which I had not even noticed was there and I walked to the other side of the stand, where he had a second jewellery showcase.

Here he was displaying, what appeared to be, a group of much more ordinary gold signet rings. But, when he returned to talk to me again, Peter put me straight. They were actually English Medieval rings of gold and silver. Some were signet rings others were guild rings or iconography rings, worn by pilgrims and etched with icons of Saint Christopher etc. There were sixteenth and seventeenth century Posy rings: mostly plain gold bands bearing sentiments etched around the inside of the ring, in Olde English. This was an area of collecting I had never considered. I have never had much interest in jewellery as adornment, but Peter's jewellery was a lot more than that - it was sculpture, design and graphic art and everything had a story and a history attached. These small masterpieces were a revelation to me.

I did not buy anything from Peter Szuhay at Olympia, although he did make my day and gave me something to write about.
