Wood carving is a special craft. It requires extreme patience that could flourish with a fine imagination. If you decide to become a wood carver, you'll have several styles to choose from. You could use just a piece of wood and a small knife. Or you could go so far as using power tools. So how can you know which style is best for you?

There are five main styles of woodcarving. Each style is distinctly different from the other. These styles are whittling, chip carving, relief carving, intaglio carving and carving in the round.

◦ Whittling. Whittling involves the removal of pare shavings or bits of wood with a cutting blade. It is the simplest form of wood carving, but not actually the art of wood carving. This is a significant distinction because whittling is, and should always be, very simple. All you need is a piece of wood and a knife and you're set to go. And because it is so simple, whittled objects don't have much detail, as is the case in all other styles of wood carving.

When you're holding a whittled object in your hand, you absolutely know it. You can plainly see each knife stroke. It remains as simple as when it began centuries ago, during the time of cavemen. Isn't that amazing?

◦ Chip Carving. Chip carving involves the use of several knives to remove small pieces of wood (chips) from a flat wood surface. These are specially made chip knives that are used to push or pull at the wood, cutting upwards or downwards to free each chip.

Chip carving has expanded to become its own art form. The main technique is to chip varying triangular shapes from the wood. This is done in a way that creates intricately detailed patterns that are often geometric in nature. Free form lines are regularly used to accentuate these chipped patterns. You could really let your imagination go.

◦ Relief Carving. This type of carving is done on a flat back cut of wood with images cut in 3-dimensional fashion. These are the wood carvings you see on walls or sitting on tables or surface tops.

There are two types of relief carving. A low relief carving is identifiable by the visual effect that is created. Without shadows to imply deep carving, the product appears very shallow and is thus considered low relief. In high relief carvings, a spectacular depth effect is created by the addition of shadows throughout. Both types result in carvings with good dimension and detail. The end product is polished to create a very smooth surface. Then it may be painted, waxed or varnished.

◦ Intaglio Carving. This style of wood carving is very similar to relief carving. But instead of looking as though it is above the wood surface, it looks as if it is part of the wood. This is because the design is actually carved deep into the wood, below the surface. Think of old wooden rolling pins. Remember the cute little pictures that were carved into it? That's intaglio carving.

Intaglio carving has been very popular with furniture makers. It has come so far as to be fitted for a blank space, carved separately and then inserted into the furniture. How about that? It can even be found in dining tables and in bedroom furniture. It's wonderful for wood paneling. You can even see it in specialty plaques, as part of an existing decorative item or as the actual surface of coffee tables and end tables.

◦ Carving In The Round. This is the most advanced style of wood carving. It involves a completely detailed carving that can be viewed from all sides. It is carved out of the wood and its base serves as a supporting platform or as a pedestal. The carving could be a person, an animal or a landscape-nearly anything you can imagine. It could be life-sized or to scale. The sky is almost the limit with carving in the round.

This style of carving requires quite a number of tools. A variety of knives, gouges and chisels are a bare minimum. The use of power tools is not surprising and often expected. The final product then is usually quite spectacular. Oftentimes, a product of carving in the round is easily mistaken for a porcelain creation. The details are that impressive.

Wood carving has been around since the days of cavemen. With time, it has become quite an impressive art to behold. It's very relaxing, often exhilarating and extremely satisfying. If you're looking for a hobby, wood carving could be just what you're looking for.

Thoughts on ART Santa Fe

Until this weekend, the only art fairs I had ever been to were in New York. When I discovered that I had fortuitously booked a personal trip to Santa Fe during ART Santa Fe, I was very excited to see what I anticipated would be a different tasting menu of art galleries--certainly more exhibitors from the American southwest, perhaps a bit more representation from south of the border. And certainly another question I was eager to challenge pertained to my own New York snobbishness: how does the art scene here compare to that of New York? Will the quality of work hold a candle to one of the most important art hubs in the world?

Upon walking into the art fair, one entered a lobby of sorts, with a few pieces that seemed a promising preamble before entering the fair itself: of note was François Morellet's Untitled neon sculpture, from local Santa Fe gallery Zane Bennett Contemporary Art, as well as Gift (2009), an archival print on Fuji pearl by Kathleen Wilke, represented by Decorazon Gallery (Dallas, TX). But, I found, as I entered the actual exhibition space, the quality of works certainly covered the spectrum.

Before I go any further, perhaps I should explain that I have two essential and perhaps obvious requirements when I behold a work of art: first, the piece must draw me in aesthetically--it must be visually compelling. The formal principles of color, composition, design, size, shape, texture, etc, must be sound. This can be admittedly subjective because I do think it's fairly intuitive: when an art object isn't formally sound, you just know it. Secondly, the work must have some loftier ambitions: after its formal qualities have pulled me in, the work must keep me engaged with some food for thought. It doesn't have to be an overwhelming brain teaser about the state of humanity; often the piece will evoke a certain feeling in me, and I take a moment to ask myself why it has evoked this particular feeling and what that means, why I may like the feeling or dislike it. I also encourage these two very basic principles of art-looking in any collector: your collection is your's, it should start with your personal interaction with the art object, not what some gallerist or consultant tells you about the work of art.

A decent amount of the work I found at ART Santa Fe I found fulfilled step one of my art appreciation process, but was entirely lacking in step two. Some of these pieces often hail from a folk or crafts tradition, which don't aspire to conceptual ends, such as some of the selections from Gallery Ten472 (California). In this sense, you can't exactly say the work of art failed, but personally, this kind of art doesn't do it for me. Some of the pieces at the fair were so generic they very well could have been on display next to Jack Vettriano "Singing Butler" in a framing shop. I hate to be harsh, but there it is.

There were also some strong galleries with some compelling work. One of the first pieces I was drawn to were paintings by Robert Sagerman (Galerie Renate Bender, Munich). Abstract Expressionism meets Pointillism in his paintings that assume the dimensionality of relief sculpture (see detail of a painting, below). The title of his paintings come from the number of paint marks he makes to stack them up: a 12 x 12 inch piece is called 2,411 while a 41 x 71 inch painting is 16,710, thereby highlighting the process of the painting as an integral dimension of its meaning. The effect is a very textured and sensuous art work with a robust, living presence.

I also enjoyed the sculpture of David Henderson (William Siegal Gallery, Santa Fe), who has exploited the medium of carbon fiber to acrobatic ends. Given the size and texture of the pieces (which evoke polished marble or granite) they seem to have an incredible weight, but at crucial points of structural integrity, the sculpture nearly disappears to thin and delicate core. These balancing acts are achieved because of the very lightness of the carbon fiber (the largest sculpture on view, 70 x 18 x 28 inches, weighed six pounds and could be held in one hand). I should also mention that these pieces attach to the wall in innovative ways, allowing flexibility of installation. The very vulnerability (well, seeming vulnerability--the gallerist mentioned that one of the smaller pieces had been knocked on the floor opening night, rolled down the hallway and still didn't break) and tension of the pieces simultaneously stirs uneasiness and awe in the beholder.

A few more artists sparked my fancy: Chen Long-Bin's busts were quite fascinating (Plum Blossoms Gallery, Hong Kong). Long-Bin enjoys using text based media (magazines, books) and exploring them in new ways--from the raw material of stacked phone books, Long-Bin carves out busts of famous figures, such as legendary U.S. presidents and Buddhas. Just as with a piece of wood or stone, the varied, happenstance patterns of the phone book lend unexpected highlights and beautiful texture to each piece.

Lastly, David Buckingham's George Carlin RIP was a clever and poignant addition to the art fair. Buckingham's "words" pieces are composed entirely from found scraps of lettering and signage that he salvages around the L.A. area. His George Carlin RIP piece was a string of explicatives, witty and flippant and, like his other work found on his website (buckinghamstudio.com), challenges the loftiness of high art with its humorous pop culture aesthetic and references.

This last work by Buckingham was also one of the few red dots I spotted in the art fair. I chatted with the gallerist representing Buckingham, and he noted that sales were extremely slow. He also added that half has many galleries had registered to exhibit at ART Santa Fe as last year. This did not surprise me--the fair was much smaller than I anticipated. After some relieved reports regarding art fairs earlier this summer (such as Art Basel) I had hoped ART Santa Fe might have some success, but it may be the more homegrown, modest art fairs that are the real casualties of this recession.

The final verdict: am I snob, or a justified critic? I hope the latter--yes, I found much of the art to be second or even third tier, but I also must point out that all of the highlights I have mentioned did not come from New York galleries. I was quite impressed that some of the local Santa Fe galleries do have quite an eye for artistic talent. Overall it was enjoyable to see a non-New York art fair, and now I have my eyes on another destination for comparison: South America perhaps?

The world has increasingly become one global city. Over the years, wood carving has evolved into a simple part of daily life into a large industry that has produced beautiful creations exemplified by gorgeous sculptures, furniture, and wood wall art.

Of all the types of wood used for these pieces, Teak or "Tectona grandis" remains as the most popular. The name Teak is in fact derived from the Malayan word "tekka," demonstrating its importance in Asian culture and daily life. Teak is native to Burma and Thailand but may also be found throughout the Malay Archipelago. Teak timber is an ideal medium because it is soft enough to carve but is hard enough to resist the elements. I found something carved into my wood kitchen table...?

and it looks carved in. I was wondering, is there anything I can do to get it off of the table? Any Ideas?

Yes...try to use the idea of steaming the table to get it to raise...then when it is dry...get a teabag and dampen it...then dab the table where it is carved at...the tea will dye the wood and you can continue to dye it darker...as needed...wood putty and touch up paint could also help...Good Luck...ba

Whittling: Whittling Vs. Wood Carving

Whittling is the removal of pare shavings or the cutting of small bits from a piece of wood. It is the most basic form of wood carving but it is not actually the art of wood carving, as it is done today. Wood carving requires a number of tools, even power tools at that. So it could get complicated pretty fast. But this is not how it is when one whittles. All you need to whittle are two things: a piece of wood and a knife.

True whittling has always been very simple. Details in the wood aren't very refined but rather pretty coarse. When you are holding a whittled object in your hand, you know it. You can plainly see each knife stroke. Using sand paper isn't an option. This is the exact opposite of wood carving, which typically excels in details. When you're holding a wood carving of the same object, you usually won't see even one knife stroke. It's very interesting. Whittling a little girl could take a week when all you're using is a knife. Wood carving the same little girl requires more tools but it takes just a fraction of the time. She'll also have many details that couldn't be produced with just a knife.

Whittling requires no special tools, no special circumstance or any specific type of working environment. Just you, a piece of wood and your knife are all it takes. You can whittle anywhere inside or outside your home, in a car, at a picnic, in a parknearly anywhere. This is not so with detailed wood carving.

There are quite a number of special tools that you'll likely be using when you wood carve. There are detail knives and carving knives, wood rasps and wood files, wood gouges and wood chisels. And these aren't all of them. (Ever heard of a sanding stick?) There's a very good chance that you'll probably have a handful of power tools as part of your wood carving tool kit. Then you'll also need to concern yourself with how to supply electric power. It isn't so simple.

You really do need a designated work area when you're wood carving. You usually aren't even holding the wood you're working on. Many times it'd be a vise doing that for you so you'll need a good work bench or platform. And with all those valuable tools around, you don't want anyone fiddling with them. Besides the possibility of losing them, many of them are dangerously sharp and no one should touch them but you. And what about that special creation that you've been working on for so long? You surely don't want any spectators scoping it out when you're not around. Who knows what'll happen? (Hey, where'd the nose go?)

The act of whittling is considered to be a contemplative, meditative process. It isn't so much what you're whittling but the process itself. Wood carving, on the other hand, is more of an end result process. You strive to create what you see in your mind with all the details that come with it. You've a product to produce and so you may not care to spare any time.

It comes down to a matter of taste and how you feel. If you have no care to rush, you want to take your time and see what happens, whittling is for you. If you'd like to see just how skilled you can be, how good you are at bringing out details, wood carving may be just what you're looking for. Hey, try them both. You might surprise yourself.
